So You Woke Up Disabled: Get You A Mandolin!

So You Woke Up Disabled: Get You A Mandolin!

I resisted having a mandolin in my kitchen because I’ve seen some terrible injuries caused by them. Granted, they’re caused when someone isn’t paying attention or is using the mandolin unsafely but the potential for slicing off a chunk of finger is definitely there.

But there are days where I need to be able to get dinner ready with minimal effort and maximum safety.

Imagine my surprise that a mandolin lets me slice veggies and fruits quickly, easily, and evenly.

Sheer craziness!

The key is to always use the hand guard and even the safety glove that comes with it. Knock wood, I so far haven’t injured myself with the mandolin but I can slice two potatoes for dinner on about 30 seconds into perfectly uniform rounds with hardly any effort. Or consistent slices of cucumber or bell peppers!

There’s a 6 in 1 that’s slightly less expensive but I like to have lots of options because I like to cook a lot.

It’s durable, easy to clean, and dishwasher safe which is also really important. You know who can’t safely hold really sharp blades in one hand and wash them in the other?

This chick.

I have a Ninja food processor and blender and those blades are crazy sharp and hard to hold safely when they’re wet, and I might have sliced a fingertip or two before I gave up hand-washing sharp things for my own safety. But I digress…

I have two favourite kitchen tools since I woke up disabled, and the mandolin is one of them. Next up, I’ll share my other favourite kitchen thing. Between the two, I’m back to being a fully functional cook!
